Heuchera care As a group, the Hybrid Coral Bells offer the gardener a tremendous new range of foliage colors, especially for shady areas. This recent selection forms a mound of large, smooth jet-black leaves, probably the darkest form to date. Sprays of creamy flowers appear in June. In warm regions this is best in part to full shade. Excellent in the border, for edging, or in tubs and mixed containers. Foliage should not be trimmed back in the fall, but plants may be tidied up in spring by removing any withered or tired-looking leaves. Culturally, Heuchera require good drainage; blue or red clay will not do. The addition of compost, gypsum, and a little manure can send your plants flying. Heuchera sanguinea forms are more amenable to sandier soils. Standard potting soil mixes work well for "Heuch's" in containers. These plants are not pigs in pots and can live with non- aggressive pot-mates in an outdoor container for years. Heuchera do require division every three years or so. Branches can be cut off old plants and plunged into the ground with no ill effect |
